  • Cassie is churning the butter slowly and dreadfully because she is worried about the night men. she refuses to tell mama about what she saw last night. then she accidentally breaks a dish from her clumsiness.

  • "break it up!"
  • As the kids walk to school, T.J tells Stacy that he can help him on the test. When Stacy asks how he says that he has a cheat sheet for the test. In anger Stacy rips it up. However, T.J. makes another at lunch.

  • T.J. is cheating on a test and when the teacher walks by he passes it to Stacy. He thinks he shouldn't tell on T.J. and he gets whipped. After school, Stacy seeks revenge on T.J. at the Wallace store.

  • Stacy tracks down T.J. to the Wallace store. there they fight over the cheating. soon Mr. Morison comes and takes Stacy home. He decides not to tell on him but he will leave it up to him to tell his mom.
  • Mr. Granger keeps asking about the Logan's land. Big ma Cassie follows Big ma into the forest where they sit by the pond which she and her husband had called Caroline. They sit and Big ma talks about Her husband, Paul Edwards and his land.
  • Instead of punishing the children Mama takes The kids to one of the surviving Berrys. Mr. Berry is terrible looking he is described as " The face had no nose, and the head no hair; the skin was scarred, burned, and the lips were wizened black, like charcoal. " Mama shows them this so they know what the Wallace's have done. afterwards, they warn their neighbors to avoid the store.
