Storyboard Text

  • Im not crazy
  • TRUE! --nervous --very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily --how calmly I can tell you the whole story.
  • The watching
  • Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded --with what caution --with what foresight --with what dissimulation I went to work!
  • The lies
  • And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into the chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he has passed the night. So you see he would have been a very profound old man, indeed, to suspect that every night, just at twelve, I looked in upon him while he slept.
  • The narrator attempts to persuade the reader that he committed the actions intentionally and had a good purpose to.
  • The act
  • The narrator explains that he watched the old man in his sleep to catch a glimpse of the eye he hated so.
  • The Panic
  • The narrator explains that he lulled the old man into a false sense of security and then killed him.
  • The confession.
  • "Villains!" I shrieked, "dissemble no more! I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, here! --It is the beating of his hideous heart!"
  • The narrator completes his deed by smothering the old man to death then cutting up his body and placing it under the floorboards.
  • The neighbors alert authorities of a noise that they heard. So the police investigate. The narrator tries to keep his cool but something is nagging at him.
  • The narrator basically loses his mind and confesses to the crime after a beating sound drives him over the edge.
