  • It is an example of situational irony that during the festival season, while everyone is making merry, someone is getting murdered.

  • This is an example of verbal irony in that Montresor is verbalizing concern for Fortunato's state of health, when in fact, Montresor plans to kill Fortunato.
  • Foreshadowing #2
  • This is an example of dramatic irony in that the reader knows that Montresor plans to kill Fortunato but Fortunato is ignorant of that fact.
  • Foreshadowing #3
  • An Amontillado! An Amontillado!
  • This is foreshadowing in that it causes the reader to think ahead, questioning why Montresor has a trowel.
  • This is an example of foreshadowing in that it hints at the fact that Montresor will get his revenge on Fortunato.
  • This is foreshadowing in that it shows Fortunato being foolish and gullible whilst intoxicated and has a weakness to wine, therefor will likely buy into Montresor's tricks.
