Euphemia Lofton Haynes was born September 11, 1890 in Washington D.C. Her father was a African American scienctist and mother was active in the Catholic Church. Euphemia wanted to take on her mother job but wanted to take on the educational system by storm.
After graduating from M St. High School in 1907 and Miner Normal School in 1909,Mrs. Haynes went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Smith University and soon married her childhood friend Harold Appo Haynes 155,312 each year to support family.

In 1930, Haynes received a master's degree in education from the University of Chicago also becoming a professor at Columbia University she remained head of mathematics department after retiring she live the rest of her life in Washington D.C and Died July 25,1980, at the age of 89.
