  • Athens Defeated
  • We surrender!
  • In this war, the Athens dominated the sea whereas the Spartans dominated the land. This war lasted ten years. The Spartans could never invade Athens because the Athenians built long walls around their city and all the way to the seaport. These walls may have kept the Spartans out, but it kept in a plague that killed their leader, Perciles.

  • This place could be demolished by now.
  • These two city-states had a truce from 421 to 415 B.C. until the Athens made an attack in Syracuse and lost horribly. Then, the Spartans decided to retaliate and conquer Athens with allies. The Athens won many battles in the second Peloponnesian War from 410 to 406 B.C., but they surrendered in 404 B.C because in 405 B.C., General Lysander of Sparta defeated an Athenian fleet of ships which lead people to starve and die in Athens.
  • Once the fleet was defeated, people in Athens began to starve and die off to where no more men can come and fight. The Athens surrendered and the Spartans won.
  • Once victory was theirs, the allies of Sparta wanted to tear down the walls of Athens and destroy the city. they forced the Athenians to tear down the walls, but Sparta disagreed with destroying the city so it was left. It was not destroyed, but it was not unharmed.
