One day, G-D told Yona to go to the town of Ninve, and tell the people there to do teshuva, and return to the ways of G-D.
Yona did not want to do as he was told, and decided to run away. He boarded a ship, planning to travel to faraway Tarshish.
When the ship was out at sea, G-D sent a big storm and many tall waves. The ship rocked from side to side and threatened to drown its passengers.
The sailors were very scared, and began praying to their idols. Obviously, it didn't help. Desperately, they awoke Yona from his sleep. Yona understood that G-D sent the storm because of him. The sailors threw him off of the ship
G-D sent a huge whale to swallow Yona. Yona was inside the fish for 3 days! After praying, and realizing that what he did was wrong, the whale spit Yona out onto dry land. He made his way to Ninve right away to fulfill G-D's request.
"People of Ninve! Leave your evil ways, and return to G-D! G-D sees and hears everything, and it is impossible to run away from Him."
The people of Ninve listened to Yona, and left their evil ways.
