Sylvia Rivera was born July 2, 1951. Né Ray Rivera Mendosa.
Her mother committed suicide when Sylvia was only 3 years old.
I will raise you now.
She left home at the age of 10 or 11 and lived in the streets.
Her time in the streets inspired her drive to help others like her.
June 27, 1969 - Greenwich village gay bar is raided
Sylvia was one of the instigators of the riot
Let's fight back!!
Police would often beat up and randomly arrest trans people.
Police raids on gay bars were common at the time.
Sylvia fought for those who were sidelined as the gay rights movement became mainstream (i.e., trans people, POC, low-income LGBTQ+ members)
Equal rights for everyone!
