They went into Dr Roylotts room and found him on a chair, dead with a speckled band on his head. Then the band started moving and they saw that it was a Swamp Adder snake.
Sherlock then explained how he came to his conclusion. He explained that at first the gypsies and the word band had thrown him off (which is an example of a red herring).
He then remembered that the windows were barred so the gypsies could not get in. Then he remembered the phony bell pull and ventilator; he instantly thought of a snake because Dr Roylott always brought animals home from India. Then he explained how Dr Roylott had trained the snake and how the snake had turned on it's master and killed Dr. Roylott, and that was the mystery of The Speckled Band.
