Exposition: A man named Mr. Nuttel traveled to a rural area to calm his nerves. He received a letter of invitation from a woman named Mrs. Sappleton from his sister. He visits the Sappletons, and while waiting on her, 15 year old Vera keeps him company.
Rising Action: Vera takes advantage of Mr. Nuttel when she figures out he knows little to none about her aunt. Vera directs Mr. Nuttel's attention to the window and then tells him why it is open. She tells a story claiming that her aunt's two brother's and husband disappeared three years ago while on a daily shooting.
"Her great tragedy happened just three years ago."
Climax: When Mrs. Sappleton arrives, she continuously talks about her husband and brothers who are supposedly dead. Then, after conversing with Mr. Nuttel for a while, Mrs. Sappleton says she can see her husband and brothers coming in from their daily shooting.
" Here they are at last. just in time for tea, and don't they look as if they were muddy up to their eyes!'
Falling Action: Frightened that ghosts were arriving, Mr. Nuttel grabbed his things and left quickly.
" I have to go."
Conclusion: The Stappletons think Mr. Nuttel is strange for leaving and romance at a short notice was Vera's specialty.
" Who was the man who bolted out as we came up."
"Mr. Nuttel; He left so quickly, one would think he seen a ghost."
