Industrialization of the United States Portfolio
This storyboard does not have a description.
I am Fiona Glennane. I am 16 and I am immigrating to the U.S. through Ellis Island. Although Ireland is pretty, the potato famine is not. I must go to the U.S. for a chance at a new life.
Ellis Island sure is beautiful! I am so excited for my new life! Although I'll be in a poor ethnic neighborhood, I have a chance to live instead of starving to death from a shortage of potatoes. I wonder if the rumor I heard about the 3,500 deaths and the 350 babies born?
Working at a factory is hard work, and very dangerous. Plus, I am treated unfairly because I am a woman. It is unfair that I make less than men, only 7 shillings, but what are you gonna do?
Ethnic neighborhoods are not very nice. They are shabby and the crime rate is high. Lucky for me, my landlord and roommate, who lives on the first floor is an amazing man. He is British and his name is Nigel. He helped pay for me to come to the U.S.
I miss Ireland terribly. While I like the new country I live in, I yearn for my homeland. One day, I hope to return. I am afraid working in the factory has taken a toll on my health. Nigel wants me to quit. I think he has feelings for me.
I have fallen ill. Nigel is here with me. He has just proposed to me. Nigel is a very rich man. The only reason he lives here with me is to keep me safe. I have accepted his proposal. It will be a very advantageous match.
