Theme of Good vs Evil
5/6 Honors 10 English
Atticus in TKAM serves as a gatekeeper of sorts. He must protect Mockingbirds from Mad Dogs. He believes that it is a sin to "kill a mockingbird", or to wrong someone that has already been mistreated or misunderstood by others.
The Mad Dog in this story represents the evil racism which Atticus must fight. It represents the madness in ideology that Maycomb citizens have and the ridiculousness of racism.
Mockingbirds in this story symbolized innocence and the vulnerability of minorities. Both Tom Robinson, who is black, and Boo Radley, who suffered from anxiety attacks, are percieved as mockingbirds.
