Ulysses Grant was the best thing that had ever happened to the Union. Before he became the Union's military commander, we had been winning the war.
Fredrick Douglass was causing major mayhem in the South. He was advocating for the passage of the 14th and 15th amendments. The 14th amendment stated that blacks had equal rights and gave them their citizenship. In my town, there is no way people were gonna treat blacks the same. The blacks also got voting rights through the 15th amendment, well they were suppose to at least.
Now Ulysses S. Grant became "our" new president. I guess it could be worse, we could have a president who wanted to be really harsh on us and not let us back in the Union. He urged the Radical Republicans to be kind to us, which we really needed since my state and other southern states were really struggling.
Even our money was worthless; my Pa didn't know how we were gonna make it through these next few months.
Beforehand, other countries might have helped us. However, after this Emancipation Proclamation, we were fighting specifically, to keep slavery, which other countries didn't support.
What are we gonna do now? We were counting on the help of other countries!
Pa decided we needed to get out of the destroyed South. Now that the Transcontinental railroad was finished, we were able to move West and build up our lives again.
