France would not stop impressing American ships.
John Adams sent over three diplomats to negotiate a treaty with France.
We don't want to start a war so please negotiate peacefully.
France demands a $250,000 bribe before they even start negotiating about a treaty. The diplomats refused to pay it.
The three diplomats told John Adams that they should start a war against France after the French disrespected the U.S. like that. Adams chose peace.
They resent the three diplomats to negotiate again and this time the French did not demand a bribe and were able to sign a treaty with the U.S.
It all worked out that Adams had chosen freedom because they were able to not go to war and find a resolution.
