Finally, the Greeks had many tragic stories, such as the story of Adonis. In this tale, Adonis is an extremely handsome man, loved by both Aphrodite and Persephone. One day when he was out hunting, he was attacked and killed by a boar, and Aphrodite turned him into a flower so his beauty would live on.
Another Greek tragedy is the story of Orpheus, a brilliant musician who almost succeeded in saving his wife from the Underworld, only to have her taken back at the last possible moment.
Finally, the story of Pandora involves a beautiful women who opens a box she was told never to open, and ends up releasing every trouble humanity has ever known. Fortunately, she also released hope in the process, which keeps people going in the face of trouble.
The Greeks weren't the only culture with an intricate mythology though. The British also have mythological characters in the form of King Arthur and his Round Table of Knights, including Sir Lancelot.
One of the most well known stories in this mythology is that of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
In this story, a knight must travel across Wales to seek out a Green Knight who challenged him to a contest a year before.
