Exposition/Situation: Madame Loisel is a beautiful middle-class woman who is married to a store clerk. She lives in a little apartment, and she wishes she had a rich life.
Complication: The husband receives a letter to go to an evening reception at the Ministerial Mansion.
Conflict: Madame Loisel does not want to go to the party because she would look very poor. She also has nothing to wear.
Development: Madame Loisel receives money to buy a dress, and borrows a necklace from Madame Forestier. Madame Loisel has a great time at the party, and she is noticed by the men and especially the minister himself.
Climax: On her way home from the party, Madame Loisel realizes she lost her friend's necklace.
Outcome/Resolution: 10 years later, they finally payed off the cost of the new necklace they had to buy. Madame Loisel sees Madame Forestier as she walks by. She has a daughter now, while Madame Loisel has nothing. Madame Forestier tells her that the necklace she borrowed was only 500 francs.
