Symbolism: The hoe
Crooks, who is one of the principal characters in the novel . He receives the name crooks from the fact that his back is very hunched and crooked. Crooks becomes fond of Lennie, and though he derisively claims to have seen countless men following empty dreams of buying their own land
Even though others treat Crooks as if he is different, he is still viewed as a friend in the eyes of lennie as they create a bond during the early chapters to come. Both men are hard workers and they can both relate to that aspect of life.
A big symbol in chapiter 4, has to do with crooks and his hoe he uses for work. He is seen as the outcast because of the color of his skin and when treated differently he is viewed as the outcast upon his peers. Relentless to fit in he asks lennie if he can go with them and hoe in the garden. This shows the friendship towards Lennie that crooks posses.
