Sunday, August 13, 1961 was the day that the Berlin Wall went up. The locals called it 'Barbed Wire Sunday'. Lines of Grenztruppen stood along the fence of wire.
On Quiet nights in East Berlin, Fritz and Gerta would listen to the songs of the group called The Beatles. They liked the music but barely uderstood the words (english). Even though Mama dissaproved and would rather them purchase censored albums instead.
Gerta arrives in the West in a graveyard. She and her family are reunited after facing death in the tunnel to West Berlin. About 4 years of separation had finally come to a happy end.
President John F. Kennedy spoke in West Berlin in 1963. He told the people that the West (France, England, U.S.) would not allow the Soviet Union (A.K.A. Russia) to control West Berlin. He said "Ich bin ein Berliner."
John Wayne was a famous actor in the 1960s. He was a very popular cowboy actor and was famous throughout Europe as a shoot-first ask questions later hero. He always took the side of the underdog.
