Every Ancient Greek village had a god that looked after all the townspeople. One day, both Athena and Poseidon claimed the same village. Normally the gods didn't share well and two gods were too many on one small village.
Poseidon decided that the townspeople were to chose which god they wanted. Athena then challenged her uncle to a contest.
Poseidon slapped his trident onto the earth beside a mountain. A river was produced and flowed into the village. The townspeople cheered.
Then the mighty Athena waved her arm and an olive tree appeared. The townspeople cheered as they thought of the endless resources this tree could produce.
The townspeople did not have to choose which god that would look after the village. Poseidon chose for them!
Athena is the winner!
That's how the small village gained the most wise guardian, Athena. The village was named after her, Athens.
