The setting takes place in two different areas. First, Rainsford is on a boat heading to the amazon to hunt jaguars. The second is the "Ship- Trap island" where he swims to after falling off of the boat. In my opinion, this time period is in the early 1900s. "Off there to the right- somewhere- is a large island said Whitney. (Connell pg 19).
As Rainsford and Whitney are traveling to the Amazon via boat, they pass by an island known as "Ship- Trap island." As whitney goes to bed Rainsford stay up to smoke his pipe. While he is smoking he hears three gunshots from a distance. He looks over the boat but falls off. He then swims over to the island to investigate. "Rainsford quickly moved to the rail, he realized he had reached to far and fell into the sea (Connell pg 21).
When Rainsford wakes up the next morning he sees a mansion. He walks over and knocks on the door. A man named General Zaroff answers the door. He gives Rainsford food, shelter, and clothes. As the two are at dinner talking about hunting, the General says he came up with a new game. He revels that he hunts humans now and says that he will hunt Rainsford. "Civilized? And you shoot down men? cried Rainsford.(Connell pg 28).
The hunt begins! While the General is hunting Rainsford, Rainsford is trying to come up with ideas to prevent the General and his wild dogs from killing him. Rainsford has made up traps that has killed the General's best dog and Ivan. "The General was fully on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife driven by the recoil had not wholly failed. (Connell pg. 35)
After the knife was sprung, the General and his wild dogs were chasing after Rainsford. Rainsford ran with all of the energy that he had left. Once they got to the shore, Rainsford jumped off of the edge and successfully escaped from the General. "Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea." (Connell pg.35)
After having a well cooked meal, General Zaroff heads for bed. In the darkness he sees a person standing in his room. It was Rainsford! He swam back to the island to have a "chat" with the General. Rainsford then killed the General. After doing so, he then had the best sleep of his life. "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided." (Connell pg. 36
