- Walton Meets Frankenstein
- "Before I come on board your vessel, will you have the kindness to inform me whither you are bound?" (Shelley 10)
- Scarlet Fever Takes A Toll
- "Elizabeth was saved, but the consequences of this imprudence were fatal to her preserver" (Shelley 28)
- Growing Interest in Science
- "I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold the deepest mysteries of creation" (Shelley 33).
- Robert Walton of England is on an expedition to the North Pole. After his ship gets stuck in ice, he runs into a man on a sledge and the crew invites him on-bard to nurse him to health. Walton befriends him and he agrees to share his story.
- Victor Creates Life
- Victor's adopted sister, Elizabeth Lavenza, catches scarlet fever. She recovers, but Victor's mother, Caroline, catches the illness while nursing her back to health and dies herself.
- Trial of Justine
- After he experiences a tree being hit by lightning during a storm, Victor's interest in science sparks and he begins to study electricity, natural philosophy, galvanism and alchemy. At 17, he goes away to study at a university called Ingolstadt.
- Monster Returns
- Facinated by the elixir of life, Victor isolates himself in his apartment and begins to construct an animate creature. After months of labor, Victor completes his creation, but when he brings it to life, its awful appearance horrifies him.
- His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God!" (Shelley 43).
- Back in Geneva, Victor's brother William is murdered. Justine is accused because she had a picture of Caroline Frankenstein in her pocket, the same picture William had with him before he died. Justine confesses even though she's innocent, and she's executed.
- "Poor Justine was very ill, but other trials were reserved for her" (Shelley 52).
- To escape his grief, Victor travels to Montanvert, to enjoy nature. When looking out into the distance, he spots a grotesque creature who he identifies as his creation. He threats to attack to the monster, but the monster persuades him to accompany him to a fire in a cave to chat. he spots a creature loping toward him at incredible speed. At closer range, he recognizes clearly the grotesque shape of the monster.
- " I suddenly beheld the figure of a man, at some distance, advancing at me with superhuman speed" (Shelley 85).
