  • Parris
  • No-no. There be no natural cause here. Tell him I have sent for Reverend Hale of Beverly, and Mr. Hale will surely confirm that. Let him look to medicine and put out all thought of natural causes here. There be none
  • Abby
  • My name is good in the village! I will not have it said my name is soiled! Goody Proctor is a gossiping liar!
  • Putnam
  • Why, we are surely gone wild this year. What anarchy is this? That tract is in my bounds, it's in my bounds, Mr. Proctor.
  • Reverend Parris is the main character in The Crucible. He is a very opinionated man, as he feels that anyone who disagrees with his beliefs are unholy. He also is very concerned about his reputation in Salem. As it is already questioned by some people due to the way he preaches at church. Therefore at the beginning of the play he does not want there to be any talks of witchcraft, as it will tarnish his name in the town. But as the play goes on, he turns into one of the accusers of witchcraft as he wants to shift the blame to other people.
  • Rebecca
  • If so he is, then let us go to God for the cause of it. There is prodigious danger in the seeking of loose spirits. I fear it, I fear it. Let us blame ourselves and-
  • Abigail Williams is the niece of Reverend Parris. She is a very deceptive and manipulative girl, as she puts fear into her friends to get them to do what she wants. She has a shaky reputation in Salem, as she is looked down upon for having an affair with John Proctor. But she blames his wife, Elizabeth for spreading rumours about her as revenge for what she did with her husband. She is both the accuser and accused for witchcraft, as she accuses Mary Warren and Tituba for witchcraft, bt she is also questioned as she conjured spirits in the forest, which is a very grave offence in Salem.
  • John
  • I have trouble enough without I come five mile to hear him preach only hellfire and bloody damnation. Take it to heart, Mr. Parris. There are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardly ever mention God anymore.
  • Thomas Putnam is one of the wealthiest residents in Salem. He is a very greedy man as he always tries to take land from the other members of the town. And even attempts to have them killed so he can inherit their land. He gets into many disputes with his neighbours about land, and goes about his life with an attitude where he feels that everyone owes him something. He has an awful reputation in Salem, as the townspeople see him as a disrespectful, selfish and greedy man who cares about no one but himself. He is a strong accuser of witchcraft, as he wants to blame that for the strange behaviour of his child, Ruth.
  • Elizabeth
  • I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John - only somewhat bewildered.
  • Rebecca Nurse is one of the eldest and most respected women in Salem. As she is kind, caring and compassionate, and people always go to her for advice, especially in this tough time in Salem. She does not blame anyone of witchcraft, as she feels that the town needs to be better as a whole, and they need to turn to God for help. Her soft and clam demeanour helps calm everyone down and lets them think of a solution to this problem. However, Rebecca Nurse is accused of witchcraft later on in the play, as the magistrates of the court are accusing almost anyone in the town, as they want to find answers to solve this terrible crime.
  • John Proctor is one of the more interesting characters in the play. He is a hardworking man and provides for him and his wife Elizabeth. However, he does have a black spot on his name, for having an affair with Abigail Williams. In Salem, he is also questioned for not attending church on a regular basis. He claims it is not because he is unholy, but because he does not agree with the way Parris preaches in church. Proctor is one of the main people who are accused of witchcraft, as his lack of attending church make him a prime suspect.
  • Elizabeth Proctor is the wife of John Proctor, she is also a very hardworking women, as she does all of the housework, while John is at work. She is also a very forgiving women, as she gave John a second chance, even though he committed adultery with Abigail Williams. She has a very good reputation in Salem, as she is a good christian, and does everything she can to maintain her loyalty to God. She is ultimately accused of witchcraft, due to her possession of a poppet with a needle embedded in it. And that was the same needle that Abby was stabbed with, which makes her a prime suspect. However, Abby actually stabbed herself with the needle, and planted the needle in the poppet to frame Elizabeth, as a form of revenge due to their hatred for one another.
