  • Pay for Continental Soldier at the end of the War
  • I get paid by certificates. The problem is I have to mark down the price when I sell them because I want the cash directly.
  • Massachusetts Debt
  • I don't think they should be able to just take away my property when I haven't paid taxes I don't want to pay!
  • August 29th in North Hampton
  • Ya. I helped to because I don't think it's right for them to take our property away from us so we made it so they can't take it away.
  • We were shutting down our town courts so we couldn't be taken to court for not paying taxes.
  • At the end of the war the soldiers were paid a certain way. They got paid in certificates. Which they then sold to other people to get the cash right then. I do not agree with this because they would have to mark down the price at which they sold it. So you would get less out of the payment.
  • September 25th - 28th
  • We did this so they couldn't take us to court and put us in jail for these tax payments!!
  • Massachusetts got in debt. So then the legislature put a tax on the people to pay off this war debt. The people there started to have less and less money. So that meant the farmers couldn't sell their crops because the people couldn't buy them. So the farmers couldn't pay their taxes and were threatened by the government that they would take their property.
  • Shays' New Plan
  • Why are you here!? We are going to fight back!
  • On August 29th in North Hampton, armed farmers went to the Hampshire County Court of Common Pleas. When they got there they shut it down. Then other farmers started shutting down their towns courts to. This started because they didn't want to be taxed. If they couldn't pay their taxes then get their property taken away by the government.
  • The editor of the Massachusetts Centinel's Observation
  • I think that the federal government came too early. The late insurrections in commonwealth is the cause of the federal government coming into existence.
  • On September 25th - 28th, Shay's group of 600 farmers occupied the Springfield courthouse. There they prevented the Supreme Judicial Court from sitting in there. So then, In Boston, the governor sent General Benjamin Lincoln to get 4,400 troops to protect the courts. They did this so no more farmers would occupy the courts. They could also try to get the farmers out of there but they were armed with weapons.
  • There are troops coming lead by General Benjamin Lincoln to stop us! We need to get more farmers before they capture us!
  • They then realized that they were facing an organized militia. So they made a new plan. They would mount a surprise attack and overrun the new federal arsenal in Springfield. They thought that they would yield, but instead they fired back. 200 rebels had been caught and tried for treason, but were never executed.
  • Why are you firing back? I thought you would yield!
  • The editor of the Massachusetts Centinel observed that "late insurrections in the Commonwealth...must be considered as the cause of bringing [the federal government] into existence, at a much earlier period than would otherwise have been." He means that late insurrections in the commonwealth was the cause of bringing the federal government into the world. Since that is still happening they thought it was brought up too early. I agree with this statement. I do because that is the truth and what was happening.
