Storyboard Text

  • The cotton picking season begins in late August. Slaves are put to work at a very early time to begin picking.
  • Newer slaves are sent to the fields for the first time to see how much cotton they can pick. This amount becomes their daily requirement from this point on.
  • The slaves get about 15 minutes to eat a small meal in buckets around noon.
  • Cotton is picked through the day and into the night. The slaves are given virtually no rest.
  • The picked cotton is then weighed by an overseer before being stored away. Slaves who failed to pick their required amount would be punished.
  • After completing even more chores, the slaves may finally go to rest at a very late hour. They slept in small, floorless cabins in very poor conditions.
