Storyboard Text

  • We accept your apology!
  • I am sorry for causing all of you anxiety. Jonas, would you please come to the stage?
  • Me? Selected?
  • You have been selected as the new Receiver of Memory. You have been a candidate for many years, and have now proven yourself worthy.
  • I am honored to have been selected!
  • The Chief Elder explains that she has not made a mistake. She truly apologized to the audience and to Jonas for causing them anxiety. Jonas is then called forth to the stage.
  • Courage! Intelligence! Pain!
  • The Chief Elder announces to the whole audience that Jonas has not been assigned, but selected. "He blinked. What did that mean? He felt a collective, questioning stir from the audience. They, too, were puzzled" (Lowry 75).
  • WOW!
  • The Capacity to See Beyond
  • Oh, my!
  • Jonas has been selected to be the new Receiver of Memory. The Chief Elder tells the audience that this is a very, very rare selection. Jonas has been nominated as a candidate for years, and has now shown the qualities to be a Receiver.
  • I now present the new Receiver of Memory!
  • Jonas!
  • Jonas!
  • Jonas has intelligence, integrity, and courage. There is a lot of physical pain that is involved in the training, and it is much worse than any of the people in the audience can comprehend. The prior receiver can't describe it himself, just that you must have a lot of courage.
  • Jonas will develop the attribute of wisdom as he goes through his training. But, he must have "the Capacity to See Beyond". Jonas saw a change with the audience, and felt sureness for the first time.
  • Cool!
  • Whoah!
  • The crowd started cheering/chanting Jonas' name. "But at the same time he was filled with fear. He did not know what his selection meant. He did not know what he was to become. Or what would become of him" (Lowry 81).
  • Jonas!
  • Jonas!
