  • Zeus arranged the marriage of Thetis, sea nymph and Peleus, a mortal. All gods and goddesses are invited but Eris, goddess of discord was left in guest list. In anger, Eris spoils the wedding by throwing a golden apple into the crowd. Engraved on the apple are words "To The Fairest". Of course, all the goddesses want to claim it and the task of deciding falls to Zeus who is unwilling to get in the middle of the argument.
  • THE MARRIAGE OF THETIS AND PELEUS
  • Who dares interrupt the wedding of Thetis, goddess of seas? This day is sacred to gods and goddesses alike!
  • I am Eris-and since you have seen to spurn me from this banquet, I have come to sow my discord instead!
  • I insult who I please mortal! To your wedding this day I bring a gift-a golden apple. Father Zeus-its disposition is up to you.
  • Goddess, Eris, you are well named. How dare you insult my bride so!
  • Inscribed in this apple are the words "To the Fairest". On whom shall this apple be bestowed? This decision is too weighty for my head.
  • My Lord Zeus, near lives a mortal reputed to be most wise-Paris by name. Please make him settle the matter so I may be married.
  • Three Goddesses with Hermes as a guide, go to Mount Ida! Present yourselves before Paris who was known to judge fairly
  • Therefore Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite come to Paris, the son of the king of troy.
  • Paris was astonished to see the three goddesses standing there. And all are fair to his eyes. Never before he have seen such beauty. So it's difficult for him to decide
  • "Oh dear youth!", they said, which of us do you think is the fairest?
