  • The Conflict of Slavery
  • WE WANT SLAVES!!!!
  • NO SLAVES!!!!!
  • The Missouri Compromise
  • States' Rights
  • MORE AUTHORITY!!!!
  • WE MUST WORK AS A COUNTRY!!!
  • In the 1800s, there was lots of conflict and debate over slavery between the North and the South. The South which was in favor of slavery argued that the practice was crucial to their economy. While the North majorly argued against it because they had factories and industries.
  • Why South Carolina Seceded: Nullification Crisis and the Election of 1860
  • WE WILL NOT ACCEPT THESE TAXES!! WE WILL LEAVE!!!
  • BOO ABRAHAM LINCOLN!!!
  • Due to the large disagreement over slavery, a compromise was passed called the Missouri Compromise. This stated that territories above the 36 30 parallel would become free states.
  • Made Possible By Alexander Stephens
  • What kind of state will California be? Slave or Free? Will we repeal the Missouri Compromise???
  • Another huge conflict between the North and the South was the states' rights. The Northerners thought that in order to function as a nation all of the states need to follow the same rules and regulations. However, the South thought that the states should have more authority.
  • The Dred Scott Case
  • BUT WE WERE IN A FREE STATE..
  • YOU ARE STILL AFRICAN AMERICAN!!
  • South Carolina decided to nullify of refuse to accept the taxes that the U.S. gave them. Due to the fact that they were very upset and believed they were better alone, they threatened to leave the Union. However, many Georgians didn't want to secede but some thought it was crucial. Therefore, there was a split in GA between small farmers and non-slave holders and large farmers and slave holders. Another reason SC seceded was the election of 1860 which was won by republican Abraham Lincoln. This resulted to lots of rioting in the South due to the fact that the new president was a abolitionist. The southern states believed that he would end slavery.
  • When California was established as a state, the nation didn't know how to determine whether it would be a free state or a slave state. So, the Compromise of 1850 was put into place with the help of Alexander Stephens and California was made a free state. Georgia supported this act because the Fugitive Slave act which said any African American caught will be put back into slavery, even if they were free before. This was the GA platform. The Compromise of 1850 repealed the Missouri Compromise and allowed popular sovereignty otherwise known as the Kansas/Nebraska act. Although Stephens was against secession, he had a outstanding background in politics. He was governor, U.S congressman ans senator of GA.This was the reason he was chosen as vice president.
  • Dred Scott was a slave who's master died in a free state. This case wasn't a rare kind because other slaves would sue and get granted their freedom. However, this case struck much conflict between the slave and free states and it only pushed the country closer to war. Also, the outcome stated that Congress had no power to stop slavery making the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.
