  • BULLETS
  • On December 7th, 1941 at 7:50AM on a Sunday the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The attack was a surprise to the United States. The bombing probably could have been avoided if the U.S didn't ignore the new radar technology they created. Due to the bomb the U.S lost all 8 battleships, 1,178 Americans were wounded, and 2,403 were killed.
  • Men go to War
  • When Roosevelt had first heard about the war in Europe he wanted to stay neutral. But within 27 hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war against Japan. 3 days after the United States declared war on Japan we were at war with Germany too.The attack on Pearl Harbor was a major event that helped the US get up and running again.
  • Atomic Bomb
  • With all the men needing to go to war, there was no one to work in the factories. That was until the women started to work and earn money for their families. The women would produce weapons such as: bullets, guns ,explosives, and would make parts for jeeps or ships. In addition to working in factories women also joined the Armed Services.
  • Baby Boom
  • By the end of 1943, 10 million Americans had been drafted to serve in the US Armed Forces. Due to many men losing their lives in war, many mothers and wives were anxious about the war continuing. Many men, even of color, were sent to war in Japan or Europe. Over 425,000 troops from both the US and Germany died on June 6th, 1944, also known as D-Day.
  • On August 6th, 1945 the US dropped the first ever atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This atomic bomb was a 9,000 pound uranium-235 bomb. It was called the “Little Boy” and was dropped at 8:15AM. The second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki on August 9th,1945 at 11:02AM. This bomb was a 10,000 pound plutonium bomb named the “Fat Man”.
  • From 1946-1964 there was an increase in the birth rate. In 1946 more babies were born than ever before. In fact 70% of babies were born during this time. This generation of children then grew up and made up the “hippie” era of rebellion and drug usage.
