  • The Tariff Debate - 1828
  • Man... We really need a tariff to boost the nations economy.
  • In the southern states...
  • We think this tariff hurts and doesn't benefit us southerners
  • Back in the capital...
  • I think it is best for the nation and I will not hesitate to use the army!
  • We have the right to secede from our nation
  • In 1828, Jackson created a tariff on British imported goods. He believed this was best for the nation as a whole.
  • Debate between two senators!
  • States should have the right to nullify things that are not in the states interest!
  • I believe that the states should have no right to nullify laws made by the government.
  • However, the southerners, who made there main profit by agriculture and slavery, thought the national government was betraying them.
  • John Calhoun eventualy leaves office
  • Im done with this stupid country!
  • The vice president, John C. Calhoun believed that the states had a right to nullify laws that goes against there needs and had a right to secede if they wanted.
  • Summary
  • We Won!!!!!!!
  • Two senators, Daniel Webster and Robert Hayne, debated whether states should have the right to nullify laws. Daniel beleived that states should not have that right. Robert Hayne believed that the states should have the right.
  • On 1830, Jackson declared that the federal union should be preserved. On 1832, John C. Calhoun left office.
  • At the end of the Tariff Debate. The states won the debate. This was a huge victory towards states rights activists. The Northerners settled for a lower tariff and southerners, too!
