Justinian and his uncle ruled together. Justinian was his uncle Justin's official, and then became his associate. Sadly, Justin died from a foot injury.

As a result of his uncle's death, Justinian became the one and only ruler. He married Theodora a couple years into his ruling.
One of Justinian's plans was to revive the Roman Empire. His strongest general, Belisarius, helped conquer parts of Rome's territory. Justinian was now in control over parts of Italy and Spain and helped expand the Roman Empire.

Justinian created his own code: a set of harsh laws. This was called the Justinian Code and was based on "outdated" Roman Laws. Justinian's Code was one of the most remembered codes in history.
Justinian built and rebuilt buildings, cities, and churches. He rebuilt fallen villages, built the Hagia Sophia, and the Church of Holy Wisdom. A lot of these buildings became big achievements.
There was controversy all over Constantinople, the city of Constantine, called the Nika Revolt. Justinian's wife, Theodora, encouraged Justinian to put down the Nika Revolt. As a result, the revolt was ended and many died because of it.
