  • Main Idea
  • The 14th Amendment "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside." This means that any person born or naturalized in the United States is a citizen.
  • Setting
  • This took place in the United States right after the Civil War.
  • The 14th Amendment was added to the constitution on July 9, 1868, which granted citizenship to all that were born or naturalized in the United States. This included he freedmen who were former slaves.
  • Evidence
  • The 14th amendment was good for some just like "bad" for others... -The blacks shouldn't be citizens -They are property not citizens -They were made to work
  • Perspective
  • We are: -Free -Citizens -No longer beaten -Protected by the law -Equal rights
  • Audience
  • -No more slavery -We are all equal
  • Significance
  • The 14th amendment was important to the African Americans because they were going to be free which meant no more beatings, cruelty, and no more slavery. If they were going to be able to work then they're going to earn money which is also good.
