Storyboard Text

  • I call this court into session. The case concerning Ms. April O'Neil shall proceed. I call the defendant forward.
  • May 24 Edmonton Courthouse
  • It was Friday night, after curfew. The only reason I was out was because my friend Casey has insomnia and so we would go out and tire ourselves out so he could sleep. We often went out and partied, but we were safe about it, no alcohol, drugs, or anything else. It was just a good way to get tired.
  • That night I was waiting for Casey to come out of a club. It was sorta dark outside and hard to see. A man came walking down the sidewalk and bumped into me, and we both stumbled. That's when he put his wallet into my pocket. He started to walk away, put he checked his pocket then started to yell that I have stolen his wallet. I tried to say that I didn't, but he didn't listen to me. Someone called the police and they came and arrested me. I was charged with theft under $5000.
  • Well, I have gone over the case file and I, as well as the jury, have concluded that Ms. O'Neil is innocent. All charges will be dropped. Cased dismissed.
  • I think it's a good system. It protects the identity and privacy of the offender, but still gives adequate consequences. There's a couple minute things I would consider revising, but that's just personal.
  • In an interview later that day, I was asked what I thought of the Youth Criminal Justice System, which I was processed through.
  • I find it unpractical that I still had to go through the system when it was clear that I was innocent of the crime, but I understand that it was a legal necessity. All in all, the YCJA is a good, well thought out system.
