Janet Lee has just arrived from Japan a few weeks ago. Janet and her parents are now taking their tour of Janet's new school. The school's settlement worker setup the tour for the Lee family.
Since Janet only speaks Japanese, the school conducts an initial assessment test to determine the level of support Janet will require from her classroom and ESL teachers. An educational plan will be made just for Janet.
Janet's teacher introduces her to the class and sits her beside students will also speak Japanese or who have also recently immigrated to Canada. She assigns Janet a peer mentor to help guide her.
After class, Janet's teacher sits down with Janet to discuss her previous educational experiences, her life back in Japan and her learning style. Janet's teacher asks a fellow colleague who speaks Japanese to translate.
Janet's teacher review's her educational plan and she incorporates a wide variety of accommodations including multi-sensory lessons, graphic organizers, dual language texts, and voice software such as VOKI for instructional translations in Japanese.
For group work, Janet's teacher places her with a peer mentors and students who speak Japanese. The students use VOICE THREAD and and GOOGLE Docs so they can collaborate and teach Janet in their own language as well as English.
