In the opening scene of "The things they carried" (by Tim O'Brien), Ted Lavender is shot down. He was walking from the forest toward his team when he got shot in the head. This being the first action gives the story a matter of fact tone about war and death.
The climax of the novel is when the character Kiowa dies from sinking into a sewage field while the camp is bombarded with artillery. Kiowa is hit with a shell and his friend Norman Bowker tries to save him ,but he can't. His death hits the platoon and Norman. This marks the climax because his death changes the individuals in of the platoon due to his prominence to them.
