Jonas, I am going to transmit to you the memory of an something that was called an election from many, many years ago.
As you saw in the memory I transmitted to you years and years ago people lived in a world where they could choose their leaders.
It is because the Elders think that when people are able to choose something always will always go wrong. Perhaps we will never know.
That sounds like a great idea. Why doesn't our community do that?
One day, while the Giver is training Jonas he decides to give him a memory from many, many generation before them. A memory of something called an election.
After Jonas has received the memory, The Giver explains to Jonas that long before that, people had the right to choose things, like who they wanted to be there leader.
Jonas is intrigued at such a life people had back many ages before. He questions why their community doesn't have things like choices in there lives.
