  • Arthur Ashe was born on July 10, 1943. At the age of 6, Arthur's mother passed away leaving him with his father
  • He was very small and sickly when he was younger
  • Ronald Chairy, the best african-american tennis player in Richmond taught Ashe what he knew and often played with him for hours.
  • at age 10, he began spending summers at Johnson's home as a part of Robert W. Johnson's development team
  • in 1962, he entered the University of California on a tennis scholarship
  • During his sophomore year, he became the first african-american man named to the US Davis cup team
