Typically, traditions and rituals never change. As a rule, the black box is part of a tradition that will never change even though “Mr.Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset tradition as was represented by the black box.” The fact that every aspect of a tradition is significant, changing even one of those aspects is impossible. Traditions stick around even if it is a negative one.
Typically, the past, present, and future, affect each other. As a rule, what has happened in the past will most certainly determine what happens in the future. Therefore, the villagers “kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool” conveys the fact that the villagers are scared for the future because of what happened in the past and what is currently happening in the present.
Typically, the cross is used for a religious aspect. As a rule, the cross is a symbol for crucifixion, which is a negative connotation. Therefore, when Mrs. Delacroix “...selected a stone so large she has to pick it up with both hands”, this portrays the fact that the people of this community aren’t as holy as they may seem.
