The East India Company is founded in 1600. Its main objective was to contest Spanish and Portuguese control of the spice trade in the East Indies. It had £68,000 trading capital for it's first voyage, with its ships reaching India in 1608.
In 1657 the Company had its charter renewed by Cromwell. The joint stock system it was reorganised as gave it a much more durable basis. This time the capital was £740,000, 2% of the country's national income.
