Macbeth and Lady Macbeth prepare to kill the King, Duncan, in his sleep. Lady Macbeth puts drugs in the guard's drinks to knock them out and Macbeth goes to the King's bedroom to kill him.
Macbeth comes back with bloody hands and shows regret and paranoia for his actions.Lady Machbeth tells him to not think about it and to go clean up. He refusues to move so she takes the knife and puts it near the guards and smears blood on their faces.
In the morning, Madcuff discovers that the King has been murdered. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth pretend to be upset at this news. Everyone believes it was the guards from the knife and blood.
Macbeth explains that he killed the guards in a rage at the loss of the King, but in reality, he had killed them because they'd witnessed the murder.
Malcolm and Donalbain decide to leave out of fear of being accused and/or murdered themselves, which makes them seem suspicious . Ross, however, denies the idea, claiming that it doesn't make sense.
An old man later tells Ross about strange occurrences on the night of the murder. The gloomy skies, pounding thunder, trembling earth and the sudden wild nature of Macbeth's usually mild horses.
