  • Geography and Life About Ancient Greece
  • Why don't we just travel by sea?
  • Travel was one of the many difficult actions in Ancient Greece. People would have to walk with no other transportation, but the wealthier were able to afford horses to get around. Sooner or later, they started traveling over seas for quicker transport.
  • A Greek farm consisted of dry, rocky land that was surrounded by no major rivers. Land was limited and settlers from different colonies would fight for it.
  • We need this land! How else will we live?
  • We need the land just as much as your colony does!
  • There is enough water and enough land right here to start a colony for the people! Now out farming essentials are right here!
  • Starting a colony was one of the Greeks' most challenging hardships. They decided to start colonies so they would be closer to farmland, and shipping food and other goods by sea would be easier. They dealt with long voyages and finding the right place that everyone could agree on.
  • Part of building the colonies was to earn profit from trade. They exchanged their needed goods like pottery and olive oil for grain, timber, and metal. They would also have to know what direction they are going in, so they would only have stars to guide them. Over seas, if too much trade was carried, goods would spill out and they would not get as much in return.
  • You're very welcome! This pottery is so valuable!
  • Thank you for the grain and metal!
