  • At this early point in the book, Elie still has very much faith in his religion, and believes that God is watching over him.
  • "And why do you pray Moshie?"
  • Sighet Temple
  • "I pray to the God within me for strength to ask Him the real questions."
  • Elie now began to distrust in his faith, and his God as well.
  • "Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty... What was their to thank him for?"
  • "Yisgadal, veyiskadish, shmey rada... (May His name be celebrated and Sanctifieed)
  • "Never shall i forget those flames that consumed my faith forever"
  • The distrust had now gotten to a point where Elie no longer believed that religion could no longer​ help.
  • Auschwitz​
  • "For God's sake, where is God?"
  • At this point, ​Elie had such little faith, that he believed that his God was—in fact—dead.
  • "Where He is? This is where—hanging here from this gallows..."
  • Elie begins to distrust his God even more. This leads to him thinking that this whole ordeal in Gods fault.
  • "You have betrayed, allowing them to be tortured, slaughtered, gassed, and burned, what do they do? The Pray before You! They praise Your name!"
  • "A prayer formed inside me, a prayer to this God in whom I no longer believed."
  • Elie has lost all hope in God and his religion. However, he has not broke his habit of praying... yet.
