I hate the Naxos!
Helga is very unhappy with her life in the Naxos so she feels she needs to go somewhere that she belongs.
I need to go somewhere I belong.
Harlem is where I belong.
Helga goes to Harlem where she is happy for a while, until she again feels that she doesn't belong.
Actually, Copenhagen is where I belong!
Helga moves to Copenhagen with her white aunt and feels happy for a while, until she again feels out of place.
Throughout the story, Helga continues moving, searching for somewhere that she is accepted racially.
Similarly, in Passing, the characters show how they can fit into either race because they are both black and white, and how some have chosen to accept that they are black, whereas others have accepted their ethnicity. The same theme of racial oppression and identity is seen in both stories.
I'm terrified my child will come out dark!
