Storyboard Text

  • I, Mao Zedong of the communist party, control northwestern China! Soon we will have all of China to ourselves.
  • I, Chiang Kai Shek, of the nationalist party, control southwestern China. Soon we will take back northern China from the Red Army.
  • Victory is ours!
  • Mao Zedong, the leader of the communist party in China, had a stronghold in northwestern China. Mao and the Red Army controlled most of northern China.
  • I shall make 5-year plans. To expand the success of these plans, we will have communes also. This will boost our economy!
  • Chiang Kai Shek (Jiang Jieshi), the leader of the nationalist party in China, dominates southwestern China.
  • We want equality!
  • With China’s economy collapsing, thousands of Nationalist soldiers deserted to the Communists. Thus, forcing the nationalists to flee to Taiwan.
  • Communes are collective farms. In the communes, peasants worked the land together they ate in communal dining rooms, slept in communal dormitories, and raised children in communal nurseries. And they owned nothing. The peasants had no incentive to work hard when only the state profited from their labor.
  • The cultural revolution was an uprising led by the Red Guards. Its goal was to establish a society of peasants and workers in which all were equal. The new hero was the peasant who worked with his hands. The life of the mind—intellectual and artistic activity—was considered useless and dangerous.
  • Chaos threatened farm production and closed down factories causing the economy to fall. Civil war seemed possible. Mao said that the Cultural Revolution had to stop. The army was ordered to put down the Red Guards.
  • This needs to stop! Restore order at once!
