Omakayas is coming home from an errand and she is taking her time because she has for the first time been bullied by her older sister Angeline.
This is when she found a whole bush of berries. Omakayas thought that later her and her sister could plunder together.
Then she heard a rustle in the bushes and then there were two little bear cubs.Omakayas was very frightened and she didn't know what to do. Thinking for a while she finally thought about what to do and then decided to bring the bear cubs home as brothers. This was to impress her older sister and the rest of her tribe.
Then out of the blue there was the mother bear. Omakayas was very frightened at the sight of her but all the mother bear did was smell Omakayas. She smelled everything and Omakayas smelled the smell of something old and foul. Omakayas wished the bear would not smell the bear killing dogs or Old Tallow's bear claw that hung from his earlobe.
After a while Omakayas talked to the mother bear and told her she was only playing with her cubs and she didn't do anything wrong. Then the mother bear decided Omakayas was no threat. This was because she sifted all the smells and didn't think Omakayas could do anything to harm the cubs. That was when the mother slaped the bear cubs away from her. Omakayas was sad but she knew it was for the best.
Theme: The theme of this story is to be careful because being careless can punish you in the future. Like in the Birchbark House Omakayas was careless and got herself into trouble.
