Storyboard Text

  • Fort Sumter was a brick fort on a tiny island in South Carolina. Inside were about eighty US soldiers. Outside the fort, 5,000 southern volunteers were there with guns pointed at Fort Sumter. They believed it belonged to the Confederacy and wanted it back
  • Although it was only his first full day as president, Lincoln already had a difficult decision to make. Was he to tell his men at Fort Sumter to surrender because they were running out of food which would tell the people that the Confederate States were already independent or send in war ships thus sparking war?
  • What shall I do?
  • Lincoln, being the genius that he is, announced that he was sending in an unarmed supply ship. This put the ball in President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis's court. He now had the difficult decision to make on whether to fire on the ship that was delivering food to hungry soldiers or let it pass but then this siege will go on forever.
  • What will the new President do?
  • So much food!!! Now we do not have to surrender!
  • President Davis decided to send General P.G.T Beauregard, a commander of the Confederate forces in Charleston, SC, to demand that Major Anderson surrender Fort Sumter. He had to do this quickly before the supply ship arrived.
  • Make him surrender at once!!!
  • Yes Sir!
  • This became a little awkward for Beauregard considering the fact that he had once been a student of Major Anderson. Unfortunately he had no say in the matter and had to ask his former to surrender. "Anderson politely refused."
  • I am deeply sorry but I simply cannot do that.
  • YOU MUST SURRENDER!
