Storyboard Text

  • Okay class today we will be talking about density!
  • What is density?
  • Oh, I know! Does it have to do with whether an object can sink or float?
  • Yes, Peter, you are right. Density is how close together the molecules of a substance are or how much mass a substance has in a given space.
  • Are we going to do an experiment today?
  • Yes, we are, but for this experiment we are going outside to the playground.
  • How fun! We are going to learn about how density is determined.
  • Hopefully this way we can learn about how objects have more density than others.
  • Which is denser? The sand in the sand box or the grass on the ground?
  • Well, I believe the sand is denser since the molecules in the sand are more compacted than the grass.
  • You are right, Peter. Grass also has less mass than the sand in the box. So less mass equals less density.
  • Yes, you are right! Also when an object weights more it has more density as well.
  • Mrs. Espino what other ways can we determine density?
  • We would also be able to find out the density if we put pieces of grass into a cup of water along with sand. The one that sinks to the bottom is denser.
  • We should do that experiment with different liquids to see which one are denser than others. Plus it would make a fun experiment.
