The first major conflict in the story Hatchet is that brian was on his way to see his dad on a plane trip and his pilot had a mastiff heart attack and died on the scene. then he had to take control and take over the plane and crash it safe enough for him to survive. it crashed into a lake and he escaped with a few bruises here and there but nothing to serious.
the next major conflict that occurred is that Brian has very little food resources. he is really only running on a few berries at this point.he says in the text he wishes "I could go home and sit down and eat a nice juicy cheeseburger",(paulsen 46). this is showing that he wishes he had more food.
the next conflict is that while brian was picking berries in the woods he encountered a bear and it was sitting eating the berries. this is both a big problem and bad for him because their is a bear that could hurt him and the bear is eating his food supply."he heard a slight noise, to turn and see a bear. He could do nothing",(paulsen 72). this is the text were he encounters the bear.
The next conflict that occurred was when brian was sleeping in the cave when he felt something in his leg and chucked his hatchet at it. And a little later in the book they find out that it was a porcupine that had stuck his leg while he was asleep. and it seems like he was in a lot of pain."the pain it filled his leg now coming in waves, over and over again,"(paulsen 79). this quote is showing all the pain that he is in and the aginy that he is having because of these spines in his leg. and it doesn't make the setting he is in any beter for the situation either it makes it worse.
the next major conflict in the book was that he encountered a moose and that moose severely injured him. he says in the text"he felt a ripping pain in his ribs once more",(pulsen 150). and also he says,"It hammered me back down". showing that he is in a huge amount of pain.
when all that craziness was finally over the last conflict was when the tornado hit brains are of camp. he says in the text"the waves and wind mixing and tearing down trees"(paulsen 169). showing the destruction that this tornado was doing.
