Lincoln did not win the popular vote, but he did win the election with a total of 180 electoral votes.
Many Southerners did not like that Lincoln was president.
This prompted the South to secede from the United States. They have been meaning to for sometime, but this really triggered them.
The South did not like Lincoln because he promised to oppose slavery, which Southerners did not agree on.
Announcing their exit, this had become the begining of the Civil War.
