It all started when Thomas Gallaudet was determined to communicate with a young, deaf Alice Cogswell teaching her to write "hat" in the sand.
Mason Cogswell, Alice's father, was satisfied with Gallaudet's work, but unsatisfied with the amount of deaf school in America. He bid adieu to Gallaudet, as he sent him off to Europe to fix this problem.
However, the school Gallaudet was told to look over was operated by the Braidwood family, and were not very friendly in sharing their techniques.
