A story about a man accused of a crime he did not commit, but just because he is colored, he will be sentenced to the electric chair. Grant Wiggins, a grade school teacher, is assigned to the task of teaching Jefferson (the man with a death sentence) and making him smart enough to a normal man, and not a hog like the prosecutor called him.
Jefferson is given the death sentence after being wrongly accused of killing a white store owner.
A grade school teacher named Grant Wiggins is asked by someone who knows Jefferson to educate him in jail, before he dies so that he can, "die a man and not a hog."
That night he decides whether or not he should just skip town and find a non-racial place to live up north.
The whole situation angers Grant. He sees no point in helping him because he'll be dead soon anyway.
However, eventually he decides to do it after all, but as soon as Jefferson dies, he promised himself he'd leave town for good.
Grant soon visits Jefferson so that he can make him into a normal man before he dies.
