The central idea of Honor is first established when Eddie first brings it up while talking to Beatrice and he says, "and I had people in America could keep me a couple of months? The man would be honored to lend me a place to sleep."(pg.9) In this quote Eddie talks about how honored he is to keep Beatrice's cousins which is ironic considering how the rest of the story plays out.
Family is a major theme in the story and there are many times when the question of how to deal with family is brought up in discussion but it's best addressed when Alfieri is talking to Eddie and tells him, "You did your job, now it's her life: wish her luck, and let her go." (pg.42) This advice is repeated several times throughout the story and is always directed towards Eddie but his insistence to ignore it is the driving force behind the conflict of the story.
Justice is one of the biggest of the many themes in this story and one of the most constant undertones as the story proceeds but it comes to it's symbolic pinnacle towards the end of the story when Marco confronts Eddie and, "Eddie lunges with the knife. Marco grabs his arm, turning the blade inward and pressing it home as the women and Louis and Mike rush in and separate them, and Eddie, the knife still in his hand, Falls to his knees before Marco."(pg.79) Eddie is killed with the knife that he brought to the fight without Marco ever touching the blade. It's true justice and symbolism that the Knife(symbolizes problems) Eddie brought was what Killed him.
